Audio wins rounds you never shoot. If music and gunfire bury footsteps, you are playing half-blind no matter how good your aim is.
Volume hierarchy
Master volume high enough to hear soft steps. Music low or off in ranked. Voice chat loud enough to understand teammates without clipping. Sound effects should sit above music, always.
HRTF / 3D audio
Many shooters offer HRTF or spatial options. Turn them on, then test in a custom game: walk around a corner with a friend and note whether left/right feels clearer. If it feels muddy, try the flat/stereo option instead — some headsets + HRTF combinations fight each other.
Test with a known footstep, not with a chaotic ranked round.
Headset fit
Seal around the ears matters. A loose headset leaks bass and kills direction. If you play in a noisy room, closed-back headphones beat open ones for competitive clarity.
Windows quick checks
- Disable enhancements / “spatial sound” layers that double-process game audio
- Set the headset as default device
- Keep exclusive mode on if the game supports it cleanly
Once a month, replay a demo or custom and ask: could I call the enemy’s side before I saw them? If not, tune again.
